Hazelview Celebrates Major Affordable Housing Milestone for Bloor & Dufferin Development

Toronto (ON), July 22, 2024Hazelview Celebrates Major Affordable Housing Milestone for Bloor & Dufferin Development.

This past weekend at their third sponsorship of the BIG on Bloor Festival, Hazelview, with other project stakeholders, proudly broke ground on the 56-unit affordable housing building in the heart of Bloor & Dufferin where a master planned mixed-used development project is currently underway. The Bloor & Dufferin development includes several residential buildings which will add ~2000 rental homes to area, including the affordable housing building that will be the first fully constructed building within the development.

Hazelview would like to thank all the community members and partners who came out to the groundbreaking ceremony.  Several of Hazelview’s partners joined to show their support including Ward 9 City Councillor, Alejandra Bravo, city staff, STUDIO tla, Turner Fleischer, The Mitchell Partnership (TMP), Community Affordable Housing Solutions (CAHS), and many others.

The continued dedication and collaboration of these partners made this milestone possible, bringing the project one step closer to delivering a world-class example of community-oriented, pedestrian-first, mixed-use urban design.  "It's a great example of the private sector, public sector, and the non-profit space coming together in a three-way partnership to deliver solutions to housing challenges that we have in the city right now”, said Colleen Krempulec Managing Partner, Head of Sustainability & Brand, Hazelview Investments.

This year Hazelview’s sponsorship of the Big on Bloor festival and our local activation titled “Blooming Futures” was a huge success sparking conversations with hundreds of community members about the new affordable housing building and broader mixed-use development coming to the Bloor-Dufferin neighbourhood. The project team spoke to more than 600 attendees seeking information on the project. Festival goers were able to partake in family-friendly activities such as a photo wall, floral pot painting and planting, and various games ensuring a fun-filled and inclusive weekend for everyone.

Hazelview’s community impact goes beyond their presence at BIG on Bloor and commitment to building more quality, affordable homes within Toronto. The development will deliver a +$50M community benefits package that will be one of the largest community benefits packages in the City of Toronto, including:

  • A 56-unit, eight -storey affordable housing building conveyed to the City of Toronto
  • $12.5 million cash contribution to Community Affordable Housing Solutions (CAHS) to create and support additional affordable housing in Ward 9-Davenport
  • City of Toronto-owned Community Hub and daycare on the first two floors of the former Kent School building
  • A new public road that is bus-accessible to prioritize safe and convenient transportation for students and visitors alike
  • A new 3,580 m2 park at 70 Croatia St
